FLY Appoints Abraham Kieta to Coordinate Establishment of Diaspora Chapter

The initiative seeks to connect young Liberians abroad with national youth development and opportunities to contribute to Liberia’s future

The Federation of Liberian Youth (FLY) has appointed Abraham Kieta as Coordinator of its Diaspora Establishment Committee, marking a new step in the Federation’s efforts to connect young Liberians living abroad with its national youth development agenda.

Kieta will coordinate the committee’s work, facilitate consultations with young Liberians across different countries, and lead preparations for establishing a diaspora structure that will strengthen the participation of Liberian youth abroad in the work of the Federation.

The committee brings together members representing young Liberians across the United States, Europe, East Asia, China, and Rwanda, alongside individuals with diplomatic and institutional experience. It is expected to develop a framework for diaspora engagement and coordinate preparations for the planned launch of FLY’s diaspora initiative in December 2026.

Why a Diaspora Chapter?

Liberian youth are contributing to communities around the world through education, professional development, entrepreneurship, advocacy, and other forms of civic engagement. Yet, opportunities to connect these experiences and resources with organized youth leadership and development efforts at home remain significant.

FLY believes that young Liberians abroad should have a meaningful platform to participate in shaping the country’s future, regardless of where they live. Establishing a diaspora chapter will provide a structure through which they can engage with the Federation, exchange ideas, build professional networks, and contribute knowledge, skills, partnerships, and opportunities to Liberia’s development.

The initiative also seeks to strengthen connections between young Liberians at home and abroad, creating opportunities for mentorship, collaboration, cultural exchange, and joint action on issues affecting the country’s youth.

As Liberia continues to navigate challenges relating to youth employment, education, entrepreneurship, governance, and access to opportunity, the experiences and networks of young Liberians abroad can complement ongoing efforts to address these priorities.

Building a Connected Youth Movement

Under Kieta’s coordination, the Diaspora Establishment Committee will consult with young Liberians and diaspora organizations, develop proposals for the structure’s governance and membership, and identify practical ways for diaspora youth to participate in FLY’s programmes and advocacy.

The initiative forms part of FLY’s broader commitment to building an inclusive national youth movement that connects young people across counties, communities, and international borders.

The Federation will also engage relevant government institutions and partners to explore areas of collaboration and ensure that its diaspora engagement efforts complement broader national development priorities.

Preparations are underway for the planned December 2026 launch, which is expected to provide a foundation for sustained engagement with young Liberians around the world.

For FLY, the objective is clear: to ensure that distance does not prevent young Liberians from contributing to a shared national future.
